Swiss alternative to Google Drive, Docs and Sheets (free)

For years I was looking for an alternative to Google Docs and Google Sheets.

These products are great, but I simply want to get away from big players like Google.

As far as possible.

So, I was super happy when I discovered kDrive, developed by Infomaniak. It has a free plan and they value privacy and security as much as I do.

Just like in Google Drive, you can create and edit Excel Sheets (called “Grids”) and Word Documents (called “Docs”).

Under the hood, Infomaniak uses OnlyOffice, a free open-source office suite that, besided the web-version, is also available as a download for MacOs, Windows and Linux.

Here are some visual impressions of how it looks today (9. November 2025):

Grids – Alternative to Google Sheets and Excel

A little more about kDrive – the free Switzerland-based cloud service

Besided Web Hosting and other web related services, Infomaniak offers a free plan for its cloud named kDrive.

The company is rather future oriented and has pretty impressive ethical values.

Their free cloud plan comes with 15GB storage, and includes Docs, Grids and Points, which are decent alternatives to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.

Definitely worth a try!

Sync files on computer and smartphone

Syncing between my Fairphone (Android) and MacBook (macOS) has worked well for me, so far. And their constantly working on improving the experience and reliability.

There are free kDrive apps available for the most common operating systems such as macOS, Windows and Linux, and also for smartphone operating systems like iOS and Android.

I also use it for automatically backing up my smartphone photos.

More space needed?

Should you need more than 15GB, you can always upgrade, starting from 4.43 CHF / month for 2000GB (see pricing and details).

If something feels good and right, it’s worth investing a couple of Swiss Franks, in my opinion.
